Branich "Racing for Kids" at Camp
Onseyawa Camp Onseyawa is supported largely by local Rotary Clubs, and is open to any child, aged 9-16, with a physical, mental or emotional handicap which would exclude participation at other camps. Since its inception in 1956, and because it was designed to provide exceptional care to children with special needs, the camp has helped hundreds of campers to grow in self-confidence and to experience success in physical activities and human relationships. The Branich "Racing for Kids" program, now it is 5th year, is designed to use the sport of automobile racing, one of the top spectator sports in the United States today, as an aid for teaching. Team members and teachers jointly develop a custom curriculum using some aspect of racing to teach a variety of grade- and age-appropriate topics. Branich team members have hosted several Cub Scout packs at the team's Williamson, NY, facility, and participated in the Sodus, NY, Pinewood Derby early in the spring. In addition to Camp Onseyawa, visits were made to North Rose Elementary School, Florentine Hendrick Elementary School (Wolcott, NY), North-Rose Wolcott Summer School Program, and to Brighton (NY)-French Road Elementary School. Over 500 children have experienced "Racing for Kids" during the 2002 season. Branich Motorsports fields the Pace Electronics/Heluva Good Foods mini-sprinters driven by Mike Emhof (on the Central New York Mini Sprint tour), and the Wayne Regional Orthopaedics/Mr. Auto/Parts Plus NASCAR Featherlite Series asphalt modified piloted by Jan Leaty.
