As one of 55 modified drivers attempting to qualify for the feature event, Leaty turned in the third fastest qualifying speed (132.614 mph) around the newly resurfaced one mile oval. The top three qualifiers broke the track record (132.089 mph) previously set by NASCAR Winston Cup driver Rusty Wallace last July. The 100-lap race took place under clear skies on a hot and humid afternoon. The race gave the large crowd what they expected - a highly competitive race that saw the top pack of cars nose-to-tail and side by side for almost the entire race. There were 13 lead changes among 6 drivers. Leaty ran in the top 5 all day, eventually taking his Pontiac to the lead for lap 73, and then holding the lead for laps 76-89. As the end of the race approached, his car loosened up, especially in traffic, and he drifted back to finish 6th. Tony Hirshman won the race. The team will take a hiatus from racing for the month of August, and will return to NHIS for the fall event in mid-September. The team plans to make two appearances for associate sponsor Heluva Good Foods. The first will be on August 10th, as part of Heluva Good VIP Day at the Buffalo Bills training camp in Rochester, NY. On August 22th, the team will be at the Heluva Good Store in Sodus, NY. For more information about Leaty and the Schum-Branich team, visit the team website at www.speedwayad.com/BranichMod.
