NEWS & NOTES sponsored by Ed Harof, Williamsville, NY

Sponsors Added to Branich 2008 Roster
Williamson, NY - Two sponsors have recently been added to the 2008 Branich roster.

Lyons National Bank, headquartered in Lyons, NY, has sponsored the Branich "Racin' for Kids" program for several years, and recently announced it would continue that support in 2008.  The Branich team kicked off the 2008 Racin' for Kids program with a trip to Cato-Meridian Elementary School this past week for presentations to support the school's "Racing into Reading" program. The kids delighted in the opportunity to see Jan Leaty's 2008 NASCAR modified up close and personal!  For more information about our Racin' for Kids program, visit the team website at www.speedwayad.com/Branich, and click on the Racin' for Kids icon.

Branich is also proud to announce we will be teaming up with VP Racing Fuels in 2008, as VP will be providing product support for the team modifieds.  For more than 30 years, VP Racing's dedication to technological development through R&D has set it apart from other racing fuel companies.  We all are confident the partnership will add to our winning traditions.  VP Racing products are available for export worldwide and are distributed conveniently though warehouses across the U.S., North America, and around the world.  Learn more at www.vpracingfuels.com.

LNB, VP, and all of the rest of Branich's 2008 sponsors were on display last weekend at the 22nd Annual Motorsports Exposition and Trade Show, held at the NYS Fairgrounds in Syracuse.  As defending Race of Champions 200 Modified winner, Jan's Troyer modified was on display in the Oswego Speedway booth, along with the prestigious Al Gerber Memorial Race of Champions Trophy.

Pace Electronics, Heluva Good, Davie Chapman '08 Mod Sponsors!!
Pace Electronics and Heluva Good Foods, Inc., both of Sodus,NY, Wayne Regional Orthopaedics, LLC (Williamson, NY) and Davie Chapman, CPA, (Rochester, NY) have signed on to continue sponsor support for the Branich NASCAR Modified effort in 2008.   Wilwood Engineering, ATL Fuel Cells, Mr. Auto/Parts Plus, speedwayad.com and Bruneau Race Engines have already provided product support for the upcoming season.  Negogiations continue with additional 2007 sponsors to continue their support in 2008.

In 2008, Jan Leaty will pilot the team's Troyer modifieds on the Sunoco Race of Champions Tour, and will participate in selected NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour races.

The team will not be returning to Spencer Speedway for weekly racing in 2008, as the track has dropped the modifieds as the premier division.  Mike Leaty, who piloted the Branich mods to back-to-back Spencer NASCAR track championships in 2006 and 2007, will focus his efforts on his own MPL Motorsports mods on the ROC Tour, some selected races at Spencer and on the Whelen Modified tour.  Branich deeply appreciates Mike's efforts over the past tour years, and is proud to have helped him to the championships.  It is possible that Mike could be in one of the Branich mods for a special show in 2008.

Jan Wins Again - 57th Annual Sunoco Race of Champions 200!

Oswego, NY (By Oswego Speedway):  The curtain came to a close on the 57th Annual Sunoco Race of Champions on Saturday night with Jan Leaty picking up his second big money win in the modified division this September at the Oswego Speedway. Leaty, who drew the pole position, ran a solid pace and was inside the lead pack for almost the entire race en route to the popular win.

The top five positions for most of the first half of the race included the same cars of Pete Brittain, Jan Leaty, Matt Hirschmann, Lee Sherwood and Chuck Hossfeld who made up the top five at the midway point of the race. Two of the cars that were outside of the top five at the 100 lap mark that were on the charge were Erick Rudolph and Eric Beers. Rudolph and Beers were among the first group of cars to make their mandatory pit stops after the lap fifty mark. Rudolph and Beers wasted no time in getting back up to twelfth and thirteenth once the race went back to green after their pit stops. Rudolph and Beers had worked themselves up to fifth and sixth with all of the cars ahead of them still needing to make their mandatory pit stops, which essentially made their battle at that point a battle for the lead. Entering turn one on lap 132, Beers and Rudolph made contact with each other sending both cars into the second turn foam and out of contention. During the ensuing yellow flag the top four cars made their pit stops and rejoined the race on a charge back to the front.

Leaty and Hirscmann made up ground the quickest on leader Bill Hebing and a three car battle set up for the lead. Leaty passed Hebing with less than twenty laps to go and Hirshmann followed shortly thereafter. Hirscmann found himself in the same spot as he did in the 2006 RoC 200 as he chased the race leader down to the checkered flag. At the wire, it was Jan Leaty getting the win, followed by Matt Hirschmann, Bill Hebing, JR Kent and Chuck Hossfeld rounding out the top five. For Leaty, he is making a habit of winning the big money races at the Oswego Speedway. He won the Parts Plus 125 on Labor Day Classic Weekend in 2006 and repeated that win just a few weeks ago. The Race of Champions victory is the second for Leaty as he was the first winner of the race when it  moved to the Oswego Speedway back in 1996.

SPENCER TRACK CHAMPIONS CROWNED AND FIVE FEATURES RUN ON ALLSTATE INSURANCE FINALS NIGHT
by Gary M. Spaid

WILLIAMSON, NY… The 2007 NASCAR season came to close last Friday [9/7/07] at Spencer Speedway. Mike Leaty was able to repeat as the NASCAR Modified track champion finishing second to Tim McMullen in the 30-lap feature. McMullen did everything he could possibly do to try and wrench the title form Leaty.

“I’ll take my one or two wins a year, and pick up the championship”, related Leaty when asked about his driving style. “I want to dedicate this championship to the memory of John Blewett III, who lost his live running for the lead with his brother at Thompson a few weeks back.”

The 30-lap NASCAR Modified main started off with a surprise as Buck Catalano brought out the first yellow when he drifted high in the third turn and slowed exiting off the speedway surface. He was able to work his way to the back of the field for the restart.

Up front the race was all Tim McMullen, who passed Tom Kinsella on the opening lap to take the lead. McMullen was able to pull away to a three car advantage over Kinsella, until Mike Leaty passed Kinsella, on lap eight, to take second.

A yellow, on lap 19, flew when Eddie Hawkins spun to the inside of the fourth turn. This bunched the field together for the final ten laps. Young Erick Rudolph had been running third since lap eight. That ended when Buck Catalano drove under the youngster through the fourth turn on lap 23 to take third.

Catalano was not able to close the gap that McMullen and Leaty held over him as the checkers flew. Rudolph and Kinsella rounded out the top five finishers.

Spencer Speedway Banquet: Mike Leaty Crowned Track Champion; Jan Leaty Voted Mechanic of Year
Williamson, NY –  At the Spencer Speedway banquet held this past Friday at the Ontario Fire Hall, Mike Leaty of Branich Motorsports was officially crowned the 2006 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series Track Champion for the modified division.  His efforts were recognized by both NASCAR and Spencer Speedway officials on hand for the annual event.
His achievement comes exactly 20 years after his father Jan won the track championship in a modified, and represents only the second time in history where a father-son combo won championships at the same track
Enroute to his championship, Mike completed every feature lap this season at Spencer.  He finished in the top 10 in all 13 races, with two wins, 8 top 3 finishes, and 11 top fives.
Mike also was awarded the 2006 “Don and Marilyn Toal Perseverance Award.”
In addition to driving for the Branich Motorsports team, Jan serves as crew chief for Mike. At the banquet, Jan was recognized for his efforts as he was voted by his peers the 2006 NASCAR Craftsman Mechanic of the Year.
Fred Kaempffe accepted the 2006 Owner of the Year Award on behalf of his wife Lisa and all of the Branich Motorsports family.
The Branich NASCAR modified effort was sponsored in 2006 by Pace Electronic Products and Heluva Good Foods, Inc., both of Sodus, NY, Wayne Regional Orthopaedics, PLLC (Williamson, NY), Mr. Auto/Parts Plus (Ontario, NY), Lyons National Bank (Lyons, NY),  and Davie Kaplan Chapman and Braverman, LLC (Rochester, NY).  Additional support was provided by Bob Bruneau Race Engines (Bristol, CT), Wilwood Engineering, Speedway Advertising (Hooksett, NH), Sunoco Race Fuels, Pennzoil, Leaf Racewear, and WIX.

Jan Leaty 4th in U.S. Open

Williamson, NY -  The Sunoco Race of Champions Modified Tour took center stage at the 18th Annual U.S. Open at Lancaster Raceway Park on October 7, 2006.
Jan Leaty powered his Pace Electronics/Heluva Good Foods sponsored Troyer from the 5th starting position in his heat race to a runner-up finish, putting him in the redraw for the main event.  The luck of the draw put his #6 on the pole for the 100 lap feature event.  Thirty one cars were on the starting grid.
Jan jumped out to the early lead, and kept the top spot until caution came out on lap 60.  The team elected to pit for new rubber, and Leaty rejoined the fray in 23rd position.  Caution was out again on lap 76 for a multicar wreck on the backstretch, setting up a 24 lap dash to the finish.  Several drivers on new tires worked their way through the field, and when the checkered flew, Jan had clawed back to finish 4th.
The race was won by Chuck Hossfeld.  Tom McGrath was second, Matt Hirshman was 3rd, and Bobby Holmes rounded out the top five.

Mike Leaty has captured 2 feature wins at Spencer Speedway in 2006 and currently leads the point standings for the NASCAR Modifieds.

Mike Leaty Runner-up Third Week in a Row; Wins Spencer Speedway Track Championship

Williamson, NY – Mike Leaty piloted his #25 Wayne Regional Orthopaedics/Lyons National Bank sponsored Troyer modified to a second place finish in the last night of racing at Spencer on September 8th.  He also officially captured his first track championship in the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series.
Mike’s finish in the 30 lap feature event was his third runner-up finish in as many weeks.  Despite missing the win by the narrowest of margins each time, he was able to increase his lead in the track points.  Mike won the first feature event of the 2006 Spencer season and took the points lead he never relinquished over the remainder of the season.
The road to the championship was impressive.  As Mike stated in his champion’s interview in the winner’s circle after the race, he was able to complete every lap (507) of every feature event (there were 13), including two extra distance races on the historic ˝ mile oval.  He had 2 feature wins, 8 top three finishes, 11 top five finishes, and all 13 races were top 10 finishes.
Mike was supported by his dad, Jan, who was crew chief.  The rest of the Branich Motorsports team included Jan “Pops” Leaty, Sr., Nick O’Neill, Harry Donovan, Jerry Lancaster, Jack Wasson, and Don Abel.
On a historical note, Mike captured his championship exactly 20 years after his dad captured the track championship at Spencer, also in a modified carrying the number 25.
Jan and Mike will each run the 56th Annual Sunoco Race of  Champions 200 lap event at Oswego on September 16th.
The Branich racing effort is also supported by Pace Electronics and  Heluva Good Foods (both in Sodus, NY), Mr. Auto/Parts Plus (Ontario, NY), Davie Kaplan Chapman and Braverman (Rochester, NY) and Big Dog 103.5 FM (Newark, NY).

LEATYS HIT PAYDIRT SEPTEMBER 1!

Williamson, NY – Logistics was the major problem of the weekend, as both Branich Motorsports’ NASCAR modifieds were in action at the same time at different tracks September 1.    The team apparently had the solution, as both Jan and Mike Leaty hit paydirt in their respective races.
Half of the team traveled east from the Branich shop in Williamson to run the final race of the Race of Champions (ROC) North Tour at Oswego Speedway.  Some said Jan put on a clinic as he claimed the victory in the Parts Plus/Davis Brothers 125.
Luck of the draw placed Jan deep in the field for his heat.  The bad news was he finished 6th and only the top 5 qualified for the feature event.  The good news was he qualified through the consolation event.
Patience was the name of the game early in the 125 lap feature, as he methodically advanced from his 21st starting position into the top ten by the halfway point.  During caution laps a short time later, the team decided to pit, and Jan returned to the track in 15th position. New tires made the difference, as he had the fastest car going away.  He steadily worked the #6 to the front, taking the lead on lap 102.   He was never seriously challenged from there on out to the checkered flag.  Jan commented, “people make the difference. We have a great core crew and then the help on race day from my brother Steve is huge. He is such a good strategist... he knows how to read the flow of a race.”
Jan also was the recipient of the Hoosier Hard Charger Award in recognition of his scamper to the front from the 21st starting position.  Jan entered the race in second position in the ROC North Tour points and with the win nearly made up the 13 point deficit, missing the championship by a only one point.
With Jan’s win, Oswego Speedway history was made.  Mike won the ROC North Tour opening event earlier in the year. Jan and Mike became the only father-son combination to win feature events in the same season at the “Steel Palace.”
About an hour to the west in Williamson, the other half of team supported Mike’s pursuit of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series Championship at Spencer Speedway.
From the 4th starting position in the heat race, Mike moved forward to finish second.  The track handicapping system put him 4th on the starting grid for the 30 lap feature event.  Within 2 laps of the green flag he had moved to the second position.  He and track regular Buck Catalano did battle for the remainder of the race.  “I got beside him a couple of times,” said Mike, “but I didn’t have quite enough to get by him.”  Mike came home second in his #25 Troyer, but with the strong finish, clinched his first track championship with one race still remaining at Spencer. It was exactly 20 years ago this season that his dad Jan also captured the track championship, also in a modified with #25 on its side.
Mike will be back in action Friday, September 8th at Spencer, and both Jan and Mike will run the 56th  Annual Sunoco Race of Champions 200 lap event at Oswego on September 16th.
The Branich racing effort is supported by Pace Electronics and Heluva Good Foods (both in Sodus, NY), Lyons (NY) National Bank, Wayne Regional Orthopaedics (Williamson, NY), Mr. Auto/Parts Plus (Ontario, NY), Davie Kaplan Chapman and Braverman (Rochester, NY) and Big Dog 103.5 FM (Newark, NY).

Branich Hot – Three Wins in Three Days
Williamson, NY
–   The weather wasn’t the only thing hot this last weekend, as Branich Motorsports drivers captured three feature wins in three days.
On July 14, 2006, the team made the short weekly tow to Spencer Speedway for the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series.  Mike Leaty sliced and diced to his second feature win at Spencer this season.  He had to overcome not only oppressive heat and humidity, but also the track handicapping system that started him last (6th) in his heat race (he finished 4th despite a broken front spindle) and that placed him 7th on the starting grid for the feature event.  He sustained some front end damage during a restart melee early in the 30 lap feature event, but it was not enough to keep him from the win. On the strength of his win and strong feature finishes, Mike currently leads the point standings at Spencer for the modifieds.
Both the weather and Branich remained hot on Saturday at Paradise Speedway.  Erich Kaempffe first won the Briggs Junior Restricted heat race, starting 4th in the 9 kart field.  He followed that up with another heat win the Junior Unrestricted class, powering to the lead from the 5th starting position.  He started on the pole for both feature events.  In the Restricted feature he finished 3rd, but he was able to keep the Branich weekend win streak alive by grabbing first place in a hard fought 15 lap Unrestricted event.   It was Erich’s second feature win the Unrestricted class this season.
It was then Jan Leaty’s turn.  The team visited Wyoming County Speedway on Sunday for the Modified Mania Mid-Summer Championship on the 1/3 mild bullring.  There was some concern about track condition, given the continued hot air temperatures and the problem with the disintegrating track surface that occurred during the Race of Champions North Tour event about a month ago.   From the 6th starting position, Jan grabbed second in the heat, finishing behind son Mike, who was piloting his own MPF Motorsports #25.  Jan started 3rd for the feature, based on the redraw.   By lap 6 of the feature event, he moved ahead of pole sitter Billy Ray Pruitt.  The track held together, and Jan was able to keep the field at bay for the remainder of the 40 lap caution free feature event.
Mike will be back in action Friday, July 21st at Spencer, and Erich will be back at Paradise July 22nd.
The Branich racing effort is supported by Pace Electronics and Heluva Good Foods (both in Sodus, NY), Lyons (NY) National Bank, Wayne Regional Orthopaedics (Williamson, NY), Mr. Auto/Parts Plus (Ontario, NY), Davie Kaplan Chapman and Braverman (Rochester, NY), Gotcha Covered Windows and Blinds (Ambler, PA), and Big Dog 103.5 FM (Newark, NY).

Top Three’s for Leatys
Williamson, NY –   Top three finishes have been the name of the game for the Branich Motorsports NASCAR modified efforts over the past two weeks.
On June 16, 2005, the team made the short weekly tow to Spencer Speedway for the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series.  Mike Leaty backed up his opening night win at Spencer with a strong third place finish in the 30 lap feature event.  He had to overcome the track handicapping system that started him last (10th) in his heat race (he finished 4th), and that placed him 13th on the starting grid for the feature event.
The team then visited Wyoming County Speedway on June 18th for the Race of Champions (ROC) Modified North Tour event.  Jan Leaty started outside son Mike on the front row in the third qualifying race.  Rumor has it Mike gave his dad a Father’s Day gift, as Jan won and Mike finished second.  On the redraw for the feature event, Jan started 5th and Mike 7th.  Both drivers survived a rash of caution flags, at least some in part due to a disintegrating track surface on the 1/3 mile bullring..  Large chucks of asphalt wrecked havoc with cars and the race itself.  Regardless, Jan pulled off a last lap pass to finish in the runner-up position, and Mike piloted his own MPL Motorsports mount to a 7th place finish.
The troops were back at Spencer on June 23rd.  Mike started last in his heat, based on track handicapping and finished third, despite mechanical problems.  The repairs were made in time for the feature that saw Mike starting 12th (again due to handicapping) in the 20 car field.  He was able to maneuver through several accidents, taking the runner-up position at the checkered on the ˝ mile oval.
On the strength of the feature finishes, Mike currently leads the point standings at Spencer for the modifieds, and Jan has a slim lead in the Race of Champions North Tour points tally.
Mike will be back in action Friday, June 30th at Spencer, and Jan will be in the  ROC  North Tour event at Lancaster (NY)  Motorsports Park July 1st.  Mike will pilot his own MPL Motorsports #25 in the ROC race.
The Branich Modified effort is supported by Pace Electronics and Heluva Good Foods (both in Sodus, NY), Lyons (NY) National Bank, Wayne Regional Orthopaedics (Williamson, NY), Mr. Auto/Parts Plus (Ontario, NY), Davie Kaplan Chapman and Braverman (Rochester, NY), and Big Dog 103.5 FM (Newark, NY).

Mike Leaty Victorious in Season Opener at Spencer
Williamson, NY -  Under threatening skies, Mike Leaty turned in a perfect night on June 2, winning his heat race and then grabbing the NASCAR Modified feature event for his first win for Branich Motorsports in the 2006 Dodge Weekly Racing Series at Spencer Speedway, Williamson, NY.   This was the opening night of the racing season at Spencer, as rain forced cancellation of two prior race nights in May.
Luck of the draw placed Leaty on the pole in the second heat race on the ˝ mile oval.  When the green flag flew, he outdueled Dave Catalano and took his Troyer out to a lead he never relinquished.
In the feature Leaty started on the outside of row one and drag raced pole sitter Chris Finnocchario down the front stretch to take the lead on lap one.  Leaty survived several early race cautions and double file restarts to keep his lead. As the field settled, the midportion of the race was relatively uneventful.  Leaty led all 30 laps, and the caution flag flew as he took the checkered flag due to a back stretch tangle between track regular Buck Catalano and modified hotshoe Chuck Hossfeld.
Racing resumes next Friday night at Spencer.  The following weekend, Mike will be at Spencer again, and dad Jan will pilot the Branich entry in the ROC Asphalt Mod North tour event at Wyoming County Speedway  in Perry, NY, on June 18th.
The Branich NASCAR modified effort is supported by Pace Electronics and Heluva Good Foods, both of Sodus, NY, Wayne Regional Orthopaedics (Williamson, NY), Mr. Auto/Parts Plus (Ontario, NY), Lyons (NY) National Bank, and Davie, Kaplan, Chapman and Braverman, Certified Public Accountants, Rochester, NY.

The surprise of the night came from second time RoC competitor Ryan Peece who ran in third place for more than the first 75 laps of the 100 lap feature. The win for Leaty was a popular one for the youngster.

“I am a proud papa today. Mike did a Heluva Good job racing last night !!,”  said Jan the next day on raceny.com. “The kid works hard at his racing, but also owns his own car and pays his own bills.
